Three Good Things

Without a doubt, 2020 has been tough going. It is during these times when we can sometimes become overwhelmed with stress, anxious thoughts, and if your like me become distracted by all the 24/7 coverage of the COVID-19 crisis. Often we can easily overlook the good things in our lives despite everything else happening around us.

It is during these times that I find a basic positive psychology exercise 'Three Good Things' helpful in finding the blessings among the chaos. The following as been taken from Ryan Niemiec. When we slow down to look at the details of our life, we begin to understand that it is the little things that matter. This exercise invites you to reflect on the little things – small, positive things that occur during the day. Steps:

  • At the end of the day, reflect back on what went well.

  • Write down three things that went well and why they went well.

  • Maintain this as a gratitude journal for at least 1 week.

For me personally, this past week has been a rollercoaster of emotions dealing with passing of a beloved pet of 13 years (my precious Noddy), and the ongoing uncertainly of COVID-19. When I reflect on today's 3 good things for me, they are:

1. Time spend with my other bird Oliver. She has been a little unwell too, but I am so grateful to have her with me and being able to spend quality time with her. Every time I hear her chirp and eat, and cuddle up for a pat, I know she is content and feeling the love.

2. Being able to share this basic positive psychology tool with you. I really hope that if it reaches just one client and helps, then it has been worth it.

3. Having a chat with my mum by video call. Even though we only live 20 mins apart, I am not going to jeopardise her health by breaching social distancing. Always good to catch-up for a laugh by video.

4. There is no hard rule that it has to be limited to 3. My 4th good thing I am grateful for is the kindness and support of someone special whom I am yet to meet. We came close to meeting, but due to COVID-19 restrictions I have had to postpone this until they are relaxed. This person has been so kind, sincere, and always puts a smile on my face. Thank you for all your support.
